The professional development of employees is critical to the vitality and success of the individual and the organization. Professional development has two elements: knowledge and skills. While it is difficult to separate knowledge and skill, "training" is the term most often applied to skill development while recognizing that this training also builds knowledge. Knowledge-building alone is more often associated with seminars, lectures, or coursework where there is a less active role in practice, feedback, and coaching. Skill-development is most often characterized by interactive participation where skills are practiced with the guidance of a professional Executive Coach. Other examples of knowledge-building could include topics related to the products or services of the organization.

Participation in a formal training session can lay the foundation for skill development and intensify the importance of gaining new skills as a required job responsibility.
